Do you want to know how climate change affects biodiversity? Undergraduate students majoring in Biology have the opportunity to specialize in areas of particular interest by selecting from four different concentrations: Biology of Global Health, Cell & Molecular Biology, Integrative Biology, and Science Education. We provide undergraduate and graduate students access to the full breadth of the exciting and dynamic fields within the biological sciences. Examples of legal careers for biology graduates include roles in patenting, where understanding of specific scientific and technical features would help.
NEON will enable new discoveries and collaborations in the field of ecology of and beyond. With excellent communication skills and the ability to convey scientific concepts to a non-scientific audience, biology graduates can find a suitable place in a wide range of fulfilling jobs including press officer, journalist, presenter, teacher, policy campaigner and science writer. Biology students will have a good base to move into medicine, and many go into research laboratories, or the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
The term biology comes from the Greek βίος (bios), meaning life” and from the Greek λογία (logia), meaning study of”. While more than a third of Oxford biology graduates go on to further study such as a research doctorate or postgraduate course in an applied field, over half embark on a professional career after graduating in areas as diverse as conservation, industry, finance, medicine, media, teaching or the law.
We recommend you spend at least 35 hours a week studying for your Biology degree. In general, graduates of biology degrees will find that their background and skills will provide them with a broad spectrum of opportunities in both scientific and non-scientific fields. From anatomy to ecology and microbiology to zoology, the course options available for those interested in pursuing studies in biology are extremely wide-ranging.
Although these debates are serving to stimulate the science, future advances must be focused on how to direct new knowledge that is acquired to advancing the human condition and medical science. JoVE Biology includes techniques and experimental approaches in the fields of cellular, molecular, and organismal biology. From a series of workshops, you’ll gain critical knowledge in cellular aspects of biology. Bucknell University undergraduate students traveled to with biology professors Sarah Lower and Gregory Pask to western Pennsylvania to do research and scientific outreach to the general public at the annual Pennsylvania Firefly Festival.
This broad base of knowledge gives you the ability to succeed in any arena calling for biological expertise: teaching at all levels; academic, government, private, and industrial research; science journalism and law; professional fields such as medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, and optometry; allied health areas such as physical and occupational therapy; and graduate study. For the very first humans, knowledge about plant and animal meant the difference between life or death.
For subjects like cellular biology, genetics and epidemiology, practical work is likely to be lab-based, while ecology or environmental biology students will be expected to do field work. On this module you’ll attend lectures, practical classes and workshops, and take part in external visits and fieldwork study. The branch of science which deals with the study of living beings. Here, undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty collaborate on laboratory research, fieldwork, and publications with real-world application.
